PTSD Symptoms and Diagnosis
The effects of military service goes far beyond physical injuries. There are also devastating mental and emotional effects that many veterans keep bottled up inside. One of the most common effects is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Recognizing PTSD Symptoms
Whether you lost a friend or loved one in the heat of battle or simply reacted strongly to the overall effects of war, PTSD can quickly develop. It is important for you or your loved ones to be able to recognize PTSD symptoms and take charge of the feelings.
If you believe that you or a loved one is suffering from PTSD, the following are some common symptoms of the condition:
Reliving the event: PTSD sufferers often re-experience the trauma of the event through their memories or through stimuli in everyday life. Veterans may be reminded of gunfire when a car backfires.
Avoiding situations that trigger memories: Many veterans may avoid talking to or interacting with fellow troops in order to avoid remembering the event. Talking or thinking about the event is also usually prevented in any way possible.
Feeling emotionally distant: Many individuals with PTSD may distance themselves from the world by avoiding feelings of love or joy. Feeling numb is a way to not feel anything including anxiety about the trauma.
Getting hyperaroused: Rather than being completely unemotional, some PTSD sufferers may become increasingly critical of their surroundings. Sounds, sights, and feelings may heighten emotions to almost dangerous levels.
An experienced physician should be able to recognize these and other symptoms such as drinking or drug problems, depression, employment issues, and relationship problems as symptoms of PTSD. If you or a loved one is experiencing these feelings after combat or military duty, it is important to seek medical attention as well as veteran’s disability benefits.
