Persian Gulf War Veteran Disability Benefits

Starting on August 2, 1990 and continuing through the Iraq War, United States military troops were sent to Southwest Asia on operations including Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. During this time, soldiers were been exposed to many harmful chemicals in addition to enemy fire that may have caused serious physical and mental disabilities.

Persian Gulf War-Related Illnesses

During the Gulf War, troops were exposed to a variety of chemical, environmental, and medical hazards which all had the potential to cause serious harm. Some of the most common substances and dangerous exposures in Southwest Asia at the time included:

  • Burn Pits
  • Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents
  • Depleted Uranium
  • Oil Well Fires, Smoke, and Petroleum
  • Pesticides
  • Pyridostigmine Bromide (Anti-Nerve Agent)
  • Vaccinations (Anthrax and Botulinum Toxoid)

Because of these hazards, many veterans developed serious medical issues such as medically unexplained chronic multisymptom illnesses popularly referred to as Gulf War Syndrome, infectious diseases, and functional gastrointestinal illnesses.

VA Benefits for Presumptive Illnesses

After extensive research, the Veterans Administration decides which Gulf War-related illnesses are presumptive due to the exposure factors of service in Southwest Asia such as those listed above. If you believe you have developed a presumptive illness due to service in the Persian Gulf War, you may be eligible for veteran disability benefits from the VA.

In order to qualify for VA benefits as a disabled Gulf War veteran, you must make sure your name is on the VA’s registry of Gulf veterans. Being on this list provides you with the option of being examined for illnesses caused by Gulf War service and applying for benefits. Call or visit your local VA for information on eligibility for the health exam registry.
